Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of space.
