Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
