Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
